How to Find the Right Partner

물리과오크 2021. 4. 19. 12:00

Lorri, a talented designer, is starting a footwear company. She knows she needs a partner to help her build a successful organization, but she doesn't know how to choose one. She calls her friend Corey for his advice.

Lorri: Hi Corey. I'm glad you picked up. I could really use your advice about something.

Corey: Sure, Lorri - anytime. What can I help you with?

Lorri: Remember I told you about that excellent business plan development program I've been taking? Well, in going over my marterials, everything seems to point to my needing a partner to get my new shoe company off the ground.

Corey: That's not such a bad thing. The right partner can bring a lot to the table and free you up to focus on what you're best at, like your designs and marketing.

Lorri: I've been able to get my head around that, but what concerns me is how to find someone I really click with.

Corey: Well, it may sound odd, but the most effective business partnerships are often between people who have little or nothing in common. It can be a big mistake to choose a partner who's a friend, or worse still, a family member.

Lorri: Really? I don't understand. How can you run a business with someone you don't even know?

Corey: Oh, you'll get to know each other soon enough. The most important things is that your respective interests are more complementary than similar. That makes it easier for the partners to divide the responsibilities and to respect one another's contributions.

Lorri: I get it. So, I just have to look for someone who loves to do all the organizational and financial stuff I can't stand, but who might not have a creative bone in their body.

Corey: Exactly.

Lorrie: Thanks, Corey. That really helps a lot.
