The Endless Party

Carolyn and Gord are hosting a farewell party for a friend at their home. The ending time they'd put on the invitations has passed and the tired couple want to go to bed, but several guests are still drinking and chatting. What's the polite way to end the party?

 

Gord : Carolyn, can you give me a hand with something in the kitchen for a minute?

 

Carolyn : Sure, hon. What is it?

 

Gord : Actually, it's nothing. I just wanted to talk to you in private. Have you noticed the time? It's almost one O'clock and these stragglers aren't showing any signs of leaving. What should we do?

 

Carolyn : I am not sure there's anything we can do. We can't ask them to leave. That would be rude. We invited them here, after all.

 

Gord : Our invitation clearly indicated that the party was to end at twelve. As I see it, they're the ones being rude. I just want to go to bed.

 

Carolyn: Maybe if we offered them one for the road they'd get the hint.

 

Gord: Have you seen John Barton? He's already talking to our plants. If we put another drink into him he'll be proposing to Fluffy.

 

Carolyn: Hmm. I see what you mean. I guess more drastic measures might be the order of the day.

 

Gord: Here's an idea: Why don't I just put my ugliest pajamas on? I bet they'd all be gone in a New York minute.

 

Carolyn: I wouldn't want Janice Mckay to get the wrong idea. She's been making eyes at you all night.

 

Gord: Look! Simon and Tina are putting on their coats! Victory is ours!
